My time as a guitarist

Having played in numerous bands and studied music extensively at college and university level, I thought it was time I helped others achieve their own aspirations as guitarists. So, I started teaching people in the comfort of their own home. My initial foray into this service was to find out what students wanted to learn, and adapt my teaching accordingly. As such, no two lessons have been the same.

I’ve been playing since I was 15, therefore I didn’t get as early a start as most of the people I’ve taught! But guitar lessons were integral to the start of my musical career. My first teacher gave me the freedom to learn what I wanted to play each lesson. However, it wasn’t as simple as turning up to a lesson and announcing a new song I really wanted to learn.

My tutor would spin my suggestions into being more relevant to my development as a player. Perhaps I would be listening to a new song and wanted to know how a guitarist played a really cool riff. Sure, we might learn the riff, but what was equally important was that we’d deconstruct it and figure out how that player produced that awesome line. As such, this approach helped maintain my engagement around the instrument. Thus, providing essential elements that I’ve adopted in my teaching style today.

“But it doesn’t look like you have any real structure to guitar lessons!”

I hear you! On face value, yes this may seem the case, but no two guitar lessons are designed to be the same! There’s always a method to how guitar lessons are constructed. So, why don’t we take a student who has already been playing for say, 10 years. So they’re a bit lost with where they’re at with their playing. This is where the adaptability and flexibility of my tuition style comes in to play. Ensuring I know what guitarists enjoy playing, and focusing each lesson around an aspect of this is crucial. Being able to then simultaneously bring in new ideas and techniques to supplement interests, is a core element of my teaching style.

I might choose to work on a seemingly random song with a student, that may initially appear to have no reference to the guitarist’s journey. But there’s something in that song that the guitar part is doing that can be added to the player’s toolbox. It could be as simple as a new chord type or a particular lead line that’s reminiscent of a famous guitarists style. The possibilities are endless, and unique to every lesson.

Why you should take me up on a free lesson

Over the years, I’ve taught a range of people, young and old, and of a variety of different abilities! In 2017, I worked as a Pop & Rock Band Leader in schools around Sussex and Surrey. Teaching 4-11 year olds how to work together in their own bands as guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboardists and vocalists.

Now based in Swansea, I’ve crafted and developed my own teaching style that adapts to any budding guitar players’ needs. As such, every lesson is tailored to the individual. Whether rocking out to your favourite songs, noodling around the fretboard or getting ready for a graded exam, I’ve got you covered!

With the launch of www.huwllwguitar.com, I’m aiming to put my teaching services, amongst other aspects of my musicianship, on the world stage!
