Huw has been a musician for over 20 years, but didn’t pick up a guitar until he was 15. Always learning and looking to develop his technique (whilst learning some favourite songs along the way!), Huw has taken the opportunity to impart his guitar knowledge to others whenever the opportunity arises. Huw is DBS checked.
Teaching
After playing for a few years, Huw went enrolled in the Performing Musician Level 3 Diploma with Access to Music (ATM) in Brighton to hone his performance technique and learn a little more about the music industry as a whole. In turn, this led to being able to apply for a BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship at the British and Irish Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). His affinity with the guitar continued to grow, as he joined various types of bands and studied styles across various decades.
BIMM and ATM helped Huw not only develop himself as a guitarist and musician (picking up some bass skills along the way!) but also gave him the confidence in performance technique and how to impart his skillset on to others. After studying, a six month voluntary stint at ATM helping others progress on the course, ensured that he was able to effectively teach others how to start and develop their own guitar abilities.
Once confident enough, Huw begun to take private 1-2-1 lessons with beginners and advanced players in face to face settings. The lesson style developed in to a structured format that was tailored to each student’s desires and needs as a guitarist. As well as teaching privately, Huw started working for a company that taught rock and pop band lessons to primary school kids in the South East of England. This helped further cement his teaching style, especially when it came to teaching beginners.
Nowadays, Huw predominantly teaches online, 1-2-1 sessions from home, with the occasional in person lesson thrown in. Huw specialises in teaching tailored lessons to beginner guitarists and has experience in teaching all ages and abilities. There are also music lessons available in bass guitar and ukulele!
Performing Musician
As well as teaching, Huw is a seasoned performer. Having honed his craft as a guitarist and vocalist throughout his time in various original bands and as a solo performer.
After graduating., Huw joined a local band agency wherein he formed an act that would perform on a regular basis, playing an eclectic range of songs across several decades. Huw was able to tap into what it took to not only deliver a vibrant and engaging performance, but developed a keen affinity with a slew of different styles. From funk to brit-pop, rock to indie and much more.
Not only did Huw work within a regular band each week, but he was also called upon as a dep guitarist whenever the need arose. Alongside constantly developing song knowledge and technique, this aspect of the working musician helped Huw to develop a sought after and reliable work ethic. He has seamlessly slotted in to various bands as though he’d played with them for years.
